ESSIE GARRETT
in Lawrenceville, PA

(message from Tuesday):

It was 48 degrees yesterday morning with fog- ran 28 miles - in now.

Police said we can't run on the state highway, so she's running on frontage roads.

"At Mansfield, crossing tommorrow into New York. Camped outside Buchtel, an amusement park. Ran 33 miles today from Williamsport - I eat one full meal a day, fruit and nuts the rest of the time. Up at 3 Monday, rained all day, went through four pairs of shoes. Tomorrow night we are staying at a Quaker safehouse. "

"We learned that the cast iron lawn Jockeys that are in people's yards were actually a secret code for escaped slaves to know the house was sympathetic to their plight."

"We've been getting a lot of great phone calls from people. They can't always get through because when we are in a valley the phone cuts out."

"We sent videos to Channel Nine in Denver."

"In St. Christiana, PA, we went to a place where a Quaker who was defending some escaped slaves got into a gun battle the slave's 'owner' who came up from MD with a US Marshall. The Quaker was tried, and got off - the slaveowner was shot and died."
