More of Essie's visit to Havre de Grace:
Christiana, PA - where the 'riot of 1851' took place, which led to the Dred Scott decision handed down by the Supreme Court. The decision was that no matter where a slave went in the U.S., he was not free. Matthew Johnson has manumission papers for his great, great uncle, Benjamin Johnson, who participated in the riot and was tried for treason and sent back to Maryland.
Greenspring Cemetery - located in Level, MD where Jarrett Morgan, a decorated black Civil War soldier, is buried. We will visit his house and the cheese factory that he operated following the Civil War.
Garrett Island - located in the middle of the Susquehanna River at the north end of the Chesapeake Bay. This island was owned by Thomas Garrett and we know he was an abolitionist.
Hosanna Schoolhouse - located in Berkley (Darlington, MD) which was a Freedman Bureau School
Deercreek Meeting House - a Darlington, MD Quaker place of worship where strategy was made to help free the slaves.
Essie and Ellie (a local resident of Havre de Grace) will camp overnight at the Susquehanna Museum at the Lockhouse as part of Essie's desire to sleep where slaves may have stayed during their search for freedom. The Lockhouse, completed in 1839, is the beginning of a 46 mile canal to move ships up and down stream to Wrightsville, PA.
