Continental Divide Run - Final Report August 4, 1999
THE ESSIE GARRETT CONTINENTAL DIVIDE RUN
JULY 26 - AUGUST 2, 1999
| "I hope this run will help feed some of the thousands of children in Colorado who go hungry every day." - Essie Garrett |
|
Beginning on July 26, 1999, Essie and several other runners will embark on an historical journey to help raise greatly needed funds for the Food Bank of the Rockies, in Denver, Colorado. The run will begin at the Wyoming/Colorado Continental Divide Trail and conclude 250 miles and seven days later at the food bank. Throughout the run, all runners will dress in the attire of pioneers of the 1850's who painstakingly forged the first trails and paths across the Colorado Rockies and the Continental Divide. In addition, the run will help educate youth in the Denver community about the hunger, sacrifices, suffering, and perseverance their ancestors endured while establishing and mapping the great state of Colorado. "I am doing this run in support of the important work done by the Food Bank of the Rockies," said Garrett. "For every dollar our run raises, they will be able to purchase $35 in food for needy families. The organization currently distributes more than 13 million pounds of food annually to 800 hunger-relief programs in Colorado and Wyoming. It is a daunting task accomplished through the help of a small staff and many volunteers. In 1998 alone, volunteers contributed 58,752 hours assisting in administrative, warehouse, special events, and program functions." To date, Essie has logged over 20,000 miles and raised over $1,000,000 for local charities. But she has only been able to accomplish that with the help and support of individuals, families, and corporations across the U.S. and Colorado. Her runs help bring attention to the needs of people who are struggling in the community. From young children to senior citizens, single parents, the disabled and others in need, Essie continues to run to raise awareness and funds so that others might meet their basic needs. Please join Essie and the other runners in making this major event a reality.
