ESSIE GARRETT'S RUNNING SCHEDULE
For her 1998 Underground Railroad Run
This is the page to Bookmark for the Latest News Reports.

Because of the need for secrecy, Harriet Tubman followed a maze of routes over the years. (The word 'Railroad' is a metaphor - there were no tracks or locomotives involved). Essie's run will vary slightly from the intinerary below. Marcella Cella will be along, with a digital camera, and will be sending email and pictures. New pages will link to locations on this page. During the run, daily updates will follow where Essie leads us.

Essie's Run is Complete!

The Final photos and what captions we have are Here.

Essie's website will be updated periodically. Her email address doesn't always seem to work, so keep trying!

We Need Your Help!
IF YOU HAVE NET ACCESS,
(since we have not yet procured a laptop)
We need places where Marcella can log on and send news packets and .jpgs to me, Randel, so I can post them on these pages. Please contact Marcella, who is with Essie, at the numbers below.

from Louis Diggs:
What Essie needs very badly is for people from the communities that she will be running through to give her some support, like taking her and her entourage (2 other people) to places of interest in the African American communities, and if there are suspected undereground railroad "safehouses," to show them to her. When she arrived in Catonsville yesterday, I already had 11 suspected safehouses and other places of interest to show her, and it took all day. I was fortunate to secure dinner for her group (didn't realize how easy it was to get businesses to support such an event), secured rooms at the Howard Johnson's at not cost to them, and even contacted my local newspaper editor who had a reporter and photographer accompany us on most of the trip.

Thanks to those who have helped already, too!
